accoutrements :
|
equipment carried and worn by a soldier, including haversack, cartridge box, waist belt, cap box, water bottle/canteen, bayonet.
|
|
aedicula :
|
shrine framed by two columns supporting an entablature and pediment.
|
|
anthemia :
|
conventionalized decorative designs based on the honeysuckle or palmette.
|
|
bas-relief :
|
sculptural relief in which the projection from the surrounding surface is low.
|
|
bead-and-reel. :
|
molding having a profile of approximately half a circle in which bead forms alternate with disc forms.
|
|
broach :
|
one of the semi-pyramidal slopes at the comers of an octagonal spire springing from a square tower.
|
|
bronze :
|
an alloy, mostly of copper with small amounts of other metals such as tin, lead, and zinc.
|
|
cartouche :
|
ornamental panel or tablet, often elliptical, with convex field elaborately bordered.
|
|
cyma :
|
a molding having a reverse-curved, ogee-shaped profile.
|
|
dado :
|
in a pedestal, the middle member, often cubical, between the base and the cornice; also called the die.
|
|
dentil :
|
one of a series of small block-like projections forming a molding.
|
|
entablature :
|
horizontal group of members immediately above the column capitals, consisting of architrave, frieze, and cornice.
|
|
frock coat :
|
dress uniform coat, usually knee-length in front and back. kepi, soft cap with visor; forage cap. obelisk, tapered shaft of square section with pyramidal tip.

|
parade rest/rest :
|
drill position with rifle butt held on the ground in front of a soldier; several variations of the position are in the drill manuals. pedestal, architectural support for a sculpture.

|
pediment :
|
the triangular face of a roof gable in its classical form.
|
|
plinth :
|
the base block of a pedestal. pulvinated, convex. sack coat, waist-length fatigue jacket with straight unfitted back. scotia, convex molding with parabolic profile.

standard-bearer :
|
soldier holding the flag; color-bearer; usually carrying a sword in Connecticut Civil War monuments but seldom carrying a sword in service in the Civil War. stylobate, main base of a pedestal; also known as plinth. swag, garland of fruit and flowers suspended between two supports; festoon. torus, molding of convex semi-circular profile. trophy, ornament consisting of military features, often in relief. voussoir, stone in an arch between impost and keystone, waist belt, belt to hold accoutrements.
