Research Services

Are you looking for information on your Connecticut ancestors, but live out-of-state? Are you researching a Connecticut person, place, family, or event, and need some expert guidance? Are you overwhelmed by the vast sea of online resources and databases out there and need help finding answers to your Connecticut historical or genealogical questions?

If your answer to any of these questions is "Yes!" the Connecticut Historical Society may be able to help through our new service: genealogical and historical research for an hourly fee.

You can contact us in two ways:

1)  Call (860) 236-5621 x212 on Thursdays and Fridays from 9-11 am to talk to a Research Center staff member, who will take down the basics of your request.

OR

2) Send an email to research_center@chs.org (type "Research Services" in the subject line.)

A CHS staff member will contact you for additional information or to clarify your research question, if necessary. A research proposal, including a description of the materials that will be examined and an estimate of how many hours the research will require, will be sent to you within two weeks. Advanced payment by check or credit card is required upon your approval of the proposal. Any additional work beyond the scope of the original proposal will be pre-approved by you.

Requests are generally completed within four weeks. The CHS will provide you with a written report of all research findings, including a list of the sources examined and copies of relevant documents. Please understand that despite our best efforts, the research process may not uncover the information you seek; research time must be paid for regardless of the results.

Research fees are:

Connecticut Historical Society Member: $30 per hour*
Non-Member: $50 per hour*

*Please note that there is a one-hour minimum charge.
