Borrowing Procedure & Regulations
The privilege of borrowing books from CHS's Loan Collection is extended only to Members of The Connecticut Historical Society or of the CHS of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Connecticut. Members of these organizations may borrow up to three books per month.
  • When requesting a book, in person or by mail, the borrower should fill out the Society's Loan Request Form and list five volumes in order of preference, giving the author and title of each book and the page number on which it is found in the catalogue. Each volume of a multi-volume set is counted as one book.
  • Members borrowing books by mail will be expected to pay a postage and handling fee of $5.00 per volume, prepaid by check or credit card (VISA or MasterCard only).
  • The borrower is expected to pay return postage and to use the CHS's mailing label (included with each order) and packaging materials. The U. S. Postal Service has special rates available for items sent to or from libraries. Members are responsible for borrowed materials until they are received back at the Society. Please allow at least two weeks for filling and shipping each order. Books must be returned by the specified due date, since other members may be waiting to use them. Renewals will be granted when feasible.
  • Due to the increased risk of loss or damage to books mailed during the holiday rush, the CHS annually suspends use of the Loan Collection during the month of December.
  • Please treat the CHS's books with care. Extensive photocopying weakens the binding and shortens the book's life. The Society reserves the right to forbid photocopying of fragile materials, and such materials are clearly marked. Failure to honor this prohibition will result in forfeiture of loan privileges. We ask that borrowers not attempt to mend or repair books but rather report their condition to the Loan Coordinator. Writing in the books is strictly prohibited. Corrections or additions to information in the books are, of course, welcome. Such information should be sent in a separate letter to Judith Ellen Johnson , citing the source of the new information.
  • We hope that by providing this loan service, we will encourage membership in The Connecticut Historical Society and further serve the needs of those who already support the CHS through their membership and interest.

Print copies of this catalog ($10 prepaid) are available from the Loan Collection Coordinator at the CHS.
