Library Regulations PATRON REGISTRATION: Patrons must register at the reference desk. Each patron will be given a library card which is valid for the calendar year (January through December). This card must be presented in the Library on each subsequent visit. Persons without acceptable identification (a drivers license with photograph or a passport and/or a major credit card) will not be permitted to consult materials from closed stacks. PERSONAL BELONGINGS: Only materials essential to research may be brought into the Library. All other belongings (coats, purses, brief cases, tote-bags, etc.) must be left at the coat rack or in the lockers (provided free of charge). NOTE TAKING: Only pencils may be used in the Library. Patrons consulting historical manuscripts must use only the paper provided by Library staff for taking notes. All materials must be handled with care and may not be used as writing surfaces. Patrons are asked not to re-shelve library materials. PHOTOCOPIES: Photocopying will be permitted at the discretion of Library staff. Printed materials over 100 years old and bound manuscripts may not be photocopied. Requests for photocopies of historical manuscripts must be submitted on the photocopy request forms supplied, and all photocopies of historical manuscripts will be made by staff. There is a charge of 25 cents per sheet for photocopies. A surcharge may be added to the fees for staff-produced copies. Photocopies must be paid for at the Vistor Services desk. RETRIEVAL FROM STACKS: Patrons may request retrieval of items from closed stacks by completing appropriate call slips. Materials in closed stacks will be retrieved every half-hour to 4:30 PM. The Library closes at 5:00 PM. Manuscript Regulations USE OF MATERIALS: All materials are to be used with great care. Only one item is to be used at a time and should be laid flat on the table. Do not rearrange the order or make any marks on manuscripts. Notify a staff member if there appears to be an error in filing or numbering. If you wish to note a page for future reference or to photocopy, insert an acid-free bookmark, available from staff. Do not attach paper clips or other markers. Note-taking should be done to one side of the document and paper will be provided. Personal notebooks and pens may not be used. Materials may not be removed from the Reading Room. PHOTOCOPIES: Researchers may not photocopy manuscript material. A staff member will make the reproductions for you, subject to regulations. Photocopies will be held by a staff member until the researcher is ready to leave the Reading Room. A staff member will provide you with a chit for your photocopies and payment is due at the Visitor Services desk on your way out of the building. Please return all manuscript materials to library staff when you have finished using them. PUBLICATION: Manuscripts may not be published without the written permission. Please contact Rich Malley for more information. If permission to publish is granted, credit line to the proper source shall be indicated in the published work. A complementary copy of all publications which rely heavily on the CHS's manuscript holdings is respectfully requested. NOTE: The Connecticut Historical Society reserves
the right to inspect all research materials and personal articles
before patrons leave this facility, and to detain for a reasonable
period of time any person suspected of removing Library
materials. Thank you for your cooperation.
