<head>Scope and Content</head>
<p>Collection consists predominantly of correspondence, the majority of which are transcriptions of letters written by Roger Griswold during the period 1781 - 1812. Of original material in this collection, correspondence is largely personal and addressed to <persname>Fanny Griswold</persname>, <persname>Elizabeth Griswold</persname>  and <persname>Juliette Griswold</persname>. Also included are some papers and correspondence of <persname>Charles L. Boalt</persname>.</p>

<head>Biographical Sketch</head>
<p><persname>Roger Griswold</persname>, Son of Matthew and Ursula (<persname>Wolcott</persname>
) <persname>Griswold </persname>
was born in <geogname>Lyme</geogname>, <geogname>Connecticut </geogname>on May 21, <date>1762</date>. He was graduated at <corpname>Yale College</corpname> in <date>1780 </date>and until admitted to the bar in <date>1783 </date>worked in his father's office, studying law. He immediately settled to practice in Norwich, returning to <geogname>Lyme </geogname>in <date>1798</date>.</p>
<p>In <date>October, 1798</date> Griswold married <date>Fanny Rogers</date> daughter of Colonel Zabdiel and Elizabeth (Tracy) Rogers.</p>
<p>In <date>1794 </date>he entered the <corpname>Connecticut Legislature</corpname>, only to be elected to the <corpname>House of Representatives</corpname> in September of the same year. He did not return to political life in Connecticut until <date>1807</date>, serving on the benches of the Supreme and Superior Courts of the State. In <date>1809</date>, upon the death of Governor <date>Jonathan Trumbull</date>, Griswold was elected to Lieutenant Governor. In 1811 he was returned as <occupation>Governor </occupation>and remained in this office until his death.</p>
<p>With popular and official state approval, Griswold was strongly opposed to the war with <geogname>Great Britain</geogname>, and went so far as to refuse to place Connecticut militia under the command of the national government. The resulting constitutional arguments continued after Griswold's death on <date>October 25, 1812</date>.  </p>
