<head>Scope and Content</head>
<p>Collection consists largely of letters written to William Ellsworth in a professional capacity as lawyer. The correspondence was written or received in the last twenty years of Ellsworth's life after his retirement form political life and his return to the poractice of law. Principal correspondents include: <corpname>G. &amp; C. Merriam</corpname>, <persname>Chauncey Goodrich</persname>, <persname>Norman White</persname>, <persname>Henry Jones</persname>, <persname>W. G. Webster</persname>, and <persname>Henry Trowbridge</persname>.</p>

<head>Biographical Sketch</head>


<p><persname>William Ellsworth</persname> was born in <geogname>Windsor, Connecticut</geogname> on <date>November 10, 1791</date>, to <occupation>Chief-Justice </occupation> <persname> Oliver Ellsworth</persname>. He and his twin brother, <persname>Henry Leavitt Ellsworth</persname>, prepared for college with <persname>Nathan Johnson</persname>. The brothers graduated from <corpname normal="Yale College">Yale </corpname> in <date>1810 </date> and entered law training at <corpname>Litchfield Law School</corpname>. </p>

<p>Upon completing his formal law studies, <persname>William Ellsworth</persname> went to <geogname>Hartford </geogname>to train with Judge <persname>Thomas Scott Williams</persname>. In <date>1813 </date> he was admitted to the bar, and on <date>September 14</date> of that same year, he married <persname normal="Emily Webster Ellsworth">Emily</persname>, the eldest daughter of <persname>Noah Webster</persname>.</p>
 

<p>When Judge <persname normal="Thomas Scott Williams">Williams</persname> went to Congress in <date>1817</date>, <persname normal="William Ellsworth">Ellsworth </persname> was given charge of his mentor's law office. Ten years later, <persname normal="William Wolcott Ellsworth">Ellsworth </persname> accepted a professorship of law at <corpname>Trinity College</corpname> in <geogname>Hartford</geogname>, and he would hold this position until his death. In <date>1829</date>, <persname normal="William Wolcott Ellsworth">Ellsworth </persname> himself was elected to Congress and he remained there until <date>1834</date>, when he resigned of his own accord. In <date>1838</date>, however, he returned to politics as <occupation>governor </occupation> of <geogname>Connecticut</geogname>, a post he held for four years.</p>



<p>When <persname normal="William Ellsworth">Ellsworth </persname> had tired of politics, he returned to his law practice, and in <date>1847 </date> was made an associate <occupation>judge </occupation>of the state supreme court. He held this position until in <date>1861</date>, he had to retire because of his age. He died in <geogname> Hartford </geogname>on <date>January 15, 1868</date>.</p>
