The Gilman Family of Hartford, whose papers are collected here, are descended from Richard Gilman, a freeman in Hartford in 1672, who bought land in East Hartford in 1676. He married Elizabeth Adkins. The line is traced through Solomon (1676-1732), Josiah (1719-1796), Levi(?), and Oliver (1766-1843). The collection starts at this level with papers of Phineas Shepard (1766-1840) and his wife, Mary Webster (1772-1848). Their daughter, Eliza (1800-1884), married Julius (1799-1886), son of Oliver Gilman and Chloe Bemont (1767-1808).
