Tractor engine No.1, originally put in service December 31, 1912,
on Main Street near Central Row. This photo shows its ability to travel in heavy
snow with a tractor attached to the engine. Chief John C. Moran walking alongside.

Engine No.1, extra first size Clapp & Jones, first put into
operation in 1912, fitted with an American & British gas-electric tractor.

1 in Tercentenary Parade. October 12, 1935 |
The parade to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the
founding of Hartford took place on October 12, 1935. This view shows part of
the fire department section of the parade from the roof of Engine House No.1
on Main Street. The tractor steamer, formerly, No.1, is driven by Engineer Frank
R. Shannon, accompanied by Nelson Case Taintor, Jr., son of the fire board president;
with Michael J. Hickey of the machine shop force, riding on the rear.

1 in flood of '36. March 19, 1936 |
In the big flood of 1936, this tractor steamer, formerly No.1,
was used to pump out the telephone building at the foot of Trumbull Street.
The photo shows a gang of men using lumber from the truck at the left in an
attempt to raise the steamer above the floodwaters. In uniform at the right,
is William E. Judatz, a member of the machine shop force. The photo was taken
at about 3 PM, on March 19.

1 in 1948. October 28, 1948 |
Here is spare steamer, formerly No.1 Clapp & Jones extra first
size, with American & British Gas electric tractor. It was exhibited at
a Northeastern Fire Protection Conference at Aetna Life Insurance Co. at 151
Farmington Avenue, October 28-29, 1948. The engine was placed in service December
31,1912, and the tractor was attached in 1914.
