two Chiefs. ca. 1901 |
Chief Henry J. Eaton with his buggy and white horse "Chief",
on Wells Street. Chief Eaton started his career as a fireman in April 1851,
and worked his way up the ranks to be appointed chief in October 1868. He was
said to be the most efficient chief the department had ever had, and the main
reason for the infrequent loss from fire in Hartford. He was ever ready to reminisce,
but would always be on the lookout for new developments for the department.
The two chiefs were photographed by William G. Dudley, ca. 1901 south
of Mulberry Street, on the bridge over the Park River.
