Kellogg Prints: Kelloggs & Comstock

John Chenavard Comstock (1818-1862) was associated with the Kellogg brothers from 1848 to 1850. At first the firm name was Kelloggs & Comstock; however, by 1850, it appeared in the form Kellogg & Co. After Comstock left the firm, it resumed its previous name, E.B. & E.C. Kellogg. Comstock was apparently a business partner, and not a very successful one. There is no evidence that he had practical knowledge of lithography. He enlisted in the 1st Connecticut Volunteer Infantry shortly after Fort Sumter, served at Bull Run, and died shortly after his return to Connecticut.

Steamworks of the Hayward Rubber Co., Colchester, CT, ca. 1848-1849

Steamworks of the Hayward Rubber Co., Colchester, CT Kelloggs & Comstock. Typical of many prints of businesses produced by the Kellogg brothers, this large view of a rubber factory in Colchester was apparently commissioned by the company itself for promotional purposes.

"Prof. Jim." Janitor of Trin. Coll. ca. 1850

. Jim. Kellogg & Co. from a daguerreotype by [William S.] Roberts. This early example of a print based on a photograph was probably issued for sale to Trinity College students who knew and admired Prof. Jim.
