Elizabeth Park Rose Garden, ca. 1900 Founded in 1894 on land donated by Charles M. Pond, in memory of his wife Elizabeth, the Elizabeth Park Rose Garden is the oldest municipal rose garden in the United States. The park straddles the boundary between Hartford and West Hartford and was designed by Theodore Wirth, superintendent of Hartfords parks. Old State House Square, Hartford, ca. 1920s Two Hartford icons, the Old State House and Travelers Tower, appear in this view of the city center in the 1920s. The Old State House was erected in 1796 and served as the Connecticut State Capitol until the present Capitol building was completed in 1878. The tower of Travelers Insurance Company was erected in 1919 and the large brick Hartford-Connecticut Trust Building was erected in 1920.
Runaway Locomotive Going through the Wall of the
Hartford Roundhouse, July 8, 1905 In a freak accident on Saturday, July 8, 1905, a locomotive crashed through the wall of the Hartford roundhouse, which was located on the site of the present State Armory. At the turn of the 20th century, the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad provided frequent and convenient train service from Hartfords Union Station.
Soldiers and Sailors Arch and Connecticut State Capitol
in the Summer, ca. 1890 The Connecticut State Capitol, completed in 1878 to the designs of Richard M. Upjohn, provides a dramatic backdrop for Bushnell Park, established in 1854 and the oldest municipal park in the United States. The brownstone Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch was erected in 1885 as monument to those who served and died in the Civil War.
Baseball Game at Bulkeley Stadium, Hartford, ca. 1940s Hartfords Bulkeley Stadium, which opened in 1921, was home to professional and semi-professional baseball teams such as the Hartford Chiefs and the Savitt Gems. The stadium, which occupied the site between Franklin Avenue, Hamner, and George Streets, was torn down in 1960. A memorial plaque marks the site today.

Interior of Otto Hennings Café, Temple Street, Hartford, 1905 Otto Hennings Café was located in the neighborhood below Front Street which was home to a vibrant mix of immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
