Biographical Sketch

Gennaro "Jerry" Joseph Capobianco was born on September 23rd, 1948, the second of five children. His parents were Ciriaco "Jerry" Augustine Capobianco (born February 16th, 1926) and Ada "Ida" Constance Capobianco (nee Mazzafera; born February 26th, 1926). He had one older sister and three younger siblings: Kathleen Marie Capobianco (born August 18th, 1947), Richard Wayne Capobianco (born April 5th, 1951), Ronald Thomas Capobianco (born October 9th, 1952), and Donna Lee Capobianco (May 14th, 1956).

Jerry's parents were married on June 8th, 1946. His father, Ciriaco, served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a machinist and rose to the rank of Petty Officer First Class. He was born in Hartford but his family came from Frigento, Province of Avellino, Campania, Italy. Jerry's paternal grandparents, Gennaro and Catherine (DiLeo) Capobianco, were both born in Frigento, Gennaro. Gennaro was born on December 21st, 1889 (died September 22nd, 1962) and Catherine on February 16th, 1892 (died November 22nd, 1970). They were married on April 5th, 1913 and lived in Hartford for decades.

Ciriaco had two siblings: Rocco Thomas (born November 24th, 1924, died March 16th, 1987) and Josephine Mary (born June 3rd, 1923, died March 27th, 1991). He died on November 2nd, 1964 at the age of 38.

Jerry's mother's family came from Mormanno, Province of Cosenza, Calabria, Italy. His maternal grandparents, Giuseppe and Maria (Fortunato) Mazzafera, were married in 1924. They were niece and uncle. Giuseppe's parents were Cristoforo and Maria Stella (Blotto) Mazzafera. He married his sister Caterina's daughter. Her husband was named Francesco Fortunato. They married in 1905; both died in 1953.

Giuseppe was born on October 23rd, 1891 and fought in World War I. He was taken prisoner in Austria. Maria was born in 1907; she was 17 when they were married. Giuseppe was 33. The two moved to the United States and settled in Connecticut. They had seven children, several of whom died very young. Daughters Ida (born February 16th, 1926) and Gloria Ann (born in 1928) married brothers Ciriaco and Rocco Capobianco. A younger brother Christopher Anthony was born in 1938. Giuseppe died on October 3rd, 1963; Maria died in 1995.

Jerry's older sister Kathleen had a child in 1971, Joanne, who she gave up for adoption. The two later reconnected. Joanne had three children of her own. Kathleen married Kenneth William Jardine in 1978. She died on October 10th, 2002.

His younger brother Richard was born premature and was mentally retarded. He was blind and could not speak, although he understood English. He was institutionalized for many years and died on December 23rd, 2003.

His other brother, Ronald, married Donna Margaret Patterson and had a daughter, Catherine Ann (born August 11th, 1974). The two later divorced and Ronald married Gail Elizabeth Saul in 1985. They had two children: Ronald Thomas, Jr. (born September 30th, 1982) and Ciriaco "Jerry" Gennaro (born January 20th, 1985). Ronald died on September 11th, 1995.

Donna Lee, Jerry's youngest sibling, married Carl Sferrazza on August 15th, 1987. They have three children: Alex Christian (born March 6th, 1993), Audra Rosalyn-Fay (born May 3rd, 1995) and another child (born June 16th, 1996). As of September 2009, Donna Lee is still alive, having outlived all four of her siblings.

As a child, Jerry wrote in a school binder that he wanted to be three things when he grew up: an undertaker, an artist and a priest. In one way or another, he fulfilled all of these goals. He attended St. Patrick-St. Anthony Elementary School through eighth grade, graduating in 1964 (he was kept back in first and fifth grades), and then Weaver Public High/Hartford Public High School, graduating in 1968. He received an associates degree from the Greater Hartford Community College in May of 1971.

While in college, Jerry spent time working on his art and had at least one drawing published in a student art booklet. In 1975 he participated in an independent study at the University of Connecticut where he worked on an Italian-American Curriculum Guide that was later published in 1976.

Beginning roughly in 1968, Jerry began throwing himself into Italian-American culture in the Greater Hartford area. He helped found the Italian-American Historical Society of Greater Hartford and joined many societies, including Order Sons of Italy, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society, the Young Italian American Society, UNICO and the St. Anthony Society. He was also a member of Connecticut's Commission on Cultural Affairs in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

In the early 1970s, Jerry ran for East Hartford town councilman and state representative as an independent candidate but was never elected. He participated in the Mayor's All-American Council/Festival in the mid-1970s and was active in the Thalassemia Foundation of Greater Hartford working for a cure for Cooley's Anemia. He worked on the bilingual Connecticut Italian Bulletin (and Review) from 1968 to 1975, eventually becoming managing editor, and launched La Voce, a bilingual newspaper, in 1973.

In 1973 Jerry received his Connecticut license as a funeral director. In 1978 he founded the Greater Hartford Funeral Home and Chapel. He was a proponent of low cost funerals and wrote a nationally syndicated article in 1981 decrying the expense of funerals and the funeral industry itself. His license was suspended from August 12th, 1984 to February 12th, 1985. He was an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church and a member of the American Society of Notaries

Other jobs held by Jerry included Pinkerton security guard, student funeral director, bowling alley maintenance worker, cab driver, ambulance driver, store clerk, computer stock and record clerk, library assistant, chauffeur for funerals and weddings and funeral home assistant.

For many years he planned on writing a history of Italian-Americans in Hartford to be titled The Italians of Hartford and Other Towns: From Colonial Times Until 1900. He later expanded the scope of the work to the present day and hoped to publish it in 1976 and later 1979 but never did. He worked on the "Our Roots" project in the mid-1970s, part of the Peoples of Connecticut Project, and co-wrote a study on Italian-Americans that was never published.

Jerry died on August 25th, 2005. He never married and had no children. He left his research on Italian-Americans to the Connecticut Historical Society.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of research material related to Italian-Americans collected by Gennaro Capobianco as well as personal school records and documents and family photographs and artifacts. It has been organized into the following eight series.

Series I: Gennaro Capobianco includes Jerry's school records (report cards, notes, artwork), correspondence (some in Italian) and personal effects (passports, an invitation to the 1969 Presidential Inauguration, articles and letters written by Jerry).

Series II: Capobianco Family is organized by family member and consists of correspondence, prayer cards, sympathy letters, immigration documents and more. It also includes documents relating to a family trip to Italy.

Series III: Italian-American Societies & Organizations is made up of documents relating to a variety of Italian-American organizations in Connecticut; some of these Jerry was a member of and others he only researched. For the Young Italian-American Society, for example, there are pamphlets and correspondence to Jerry in addition to four books of minutes (1903-1949) and historical booklets.

Series IV: Connecticut/Hartford General Organizations deals with groups Jerry was involved with that were not specifically Italian-American, including the Thalassemia Foundation of Greater Hartford the Commission on Cultural Affairs.

Series V: Historical Documents contains correspondence and documents collected by Jerry relating to Italian-Americans in Hartford during the first half of the 20th century. Included is a large collection of material from the Martino Family (letters, medical licenses, post cards, an autograph book) as well are newspaper clippings, scrapbooks and passports from other people.

Series VI: Italian-American Culture focuses on Italian-American Culture and is split into five subcategories: General Interest (flyers and pamphlets for festivals, restaurants and music), Politics (Dominick DeLucco election certificates and scrapbook), Publications (the Italian Journal, La Voce and the Istituto Italiano Di Cultura), Religion (dedication booklets, prayer cards, drawings) and Miscellaneous (an essay, retirement home booklets).

Series VII: "Our Roots" Project includes notes and drafts of chapters for the "Our Roots" project. Ten chapters are represented, many of which have copious notes and several drafts. For the most part these do not appear to be final drafts.

Series VIII: Research Material consists of Jerry's notes and research material. His interviews with Italian-Americans are included, as are scholarly works (a manuscript for a potentially unpublished 1974 book titled "Hartford's Italian Immigrants"), lengthy notes from The Hartford Courant (including an index running from 1794 to 1900), the Connecticut City Directory, Geer's Hartford City Directory, and many notes that are either from unidentified sources or may have been research for his proposed book. There are also folders of newspaper clippings from The Hartford Courant and The Hartford Times (births, obituaries, and wedding announcements).

Of particular interest are historical documents relating to Giuseppe and Maria Mazzafera. Many of these are in Italian. There are two postcards written by Giuseppe while he was a prisoner of war. There are also several passports (some of which exist in the collection only as photocopies), deeds, insurance papers and correspondence.

Also of note are documents relating to Dominick DeLucco, who was the first Italian-American mayor of Hartford; minute/record books for the Young Italian American Association and the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society; copies of The Connecticut Italian Bulletin and Review and La Voce; Jerry's invitation to the 1969 Presidential inauguration and his 1972 letter to President Nixon; and Jerry's drafts for his proposed "Our Roots" book on Italian-Americans in Connecticut.

The collection also contains a sub-collection of documents, correspondence and photographs relating to the Martino family: Torquato, a doctor, Frances, his wife, and their children Virginia and Antoinette. Several of Torquato's medical licenses are in the collection, as are copies of Antoinette's resume and some of her sketches.

See also photographs and objects from Gennaro Capobianco in the graphics and art & artifacts collections.
