Colonial Pipe Box

This project is based on a pipe box in the collections of The Connecticut Historical Society. The pipe box has the classic Connecticut shape although it is not as fancy as other examples. The long, slender knob on the drawer as well as its large, single dovetail joints tentatively date the pipe box between 1730 and 1740. It is made of primarily maple with some chestnut and white pine. The use of chestnut indicates that this piece was created in New London County.

Instructions

      1. Print out pattern pieces(see above). You may need to adjust your printer setup. The printer margins should be set at .5 inches for all margins for best results.
      2. Cut along all outside lines.
      3. Cut other line as indicated.
      4. Fold inward where indicated so that all the preprinted lines will be on the inside.
      5. If you wish to decorate the outside of the box, do so now. You can to duplicate the red wash finish of the original pipe box by painting with a dark red watercolor.
      6. Assemble by gluing or taping the tabs in order (A, B, C, etc.) for each piece. The tabs on the main box should be attached on the inside of the bottom piece using the inner line on the bottom as a guide. The tabs on the drawer are attached to the inside of the drawer front. Note that the drawer front is wider than the drawer bottom, so center the front so that there is a slight overhang on each side.
      7. Glue bead on front of drawer.
      8. Finish assembly by placing drawer in the opening at the bottom of the pipe box.
