Title IX: On the Court and Off William Howe, Education Consultant for Multicultural Education, Title IX & Interdistrict Grants, Christine A. Baker, author of Why She Plays, The World of Womens Basketball and Allison Kasic, the director of The R. Gaull Silberman Center for Collegiate Studies at the Independent Womens Forum, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C., spoke about the impact of Title IX. Passed in 1972, this controversial law was instrumental in ending gender-bias in educational facilities and was responsible for paving the path for a whole new generation of women athletes. Family Program The Circus Comes to Town! The first circus show in the United States was in the 1700s. Well keep the fun alive by using props, costumes, games, activities, and our imaginations to create our very own circus at CHS. At the end of the program, everyone will design an animal mask to take home. This program is recommended for children ages 4-8. $3 seniors, and students; $6 adults; free for members and children under 6 years old. This program is free with regular admission. History Kids: Multi-Day Summer Programs at CHS Kids will explore the daily lives of Native Americans and English colonists in early Connecticut through gallery experiences, scavenger hunts, designing a Native American storytelling bag and game, writing with quill pens, candle-making, and weaving on individual looms. This multi-day program is recommended for ages 8-12. The cost for this program is $90 for non-members and $75 for members. Receive a $10 discount when signing up for both weeks. History Kids: Multi-Day Summer Programs at CHS Kids explore the lives of families who moved to Connecticut in the past and have fun learning about their own families through gallery experiences, scavenger hunts, designing a family crest, creating a family tree, and decorating a family photo frame. This multi-day program is recommended for ages 8-12. The cost for this program is $90 for non-members and $75 for members. Receive a $10 discount when signing up for both weeks.

Civil War Encampment Free all day! Join us as we celebrate the year of Abraham Lincolns 200th birthday. Step back in time and visit a civil war encampment on the grounds of Connecticut Historical Society. Military and civilian reenactors will be on hand to demonstrate what it was like to be a soldier. Meet historical figures throughout the day including Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Beecher Stowe and others. Authors of books about Lincoln and the Civil War will be available to discuss their work and to sign books. CHSs galleries will be open from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. for visitors to view exhibitions. As part of the Lincoln Bicentennial, there will also be a display of CHSs Lincoln and Civil War collections including the famous assassination flag, one of the flags that adorned President Lincolns box at Fords Theater the night he was killed. Connecticuts Western Reserve Did you know that Ohio used to be part of Connecticut? State Historian, Dr. Walter Woodward traces the history of the Connecticut Western Reserve, claimed before the Revolution and later used to compensate Connecticut residents for their losses to the British during the Revolution.
