Summer Furniture Series:
Compete, Leave or Change: The Challenges of Connecticut Craftsmen, 1800-1820
Lecture by Alyce Perry Englund

Friday, July 20 | 5:30 pm refreshments | 6:00 pm lecture
$12 CHS/SAPFM members | $15 non-members

In the decades following the American Revolution, the Connecticut cabinetmaking industry changed significantly in its stylistic preferences and workshop practices. This lecture will examine the new challenges confronting Federal Period cabinetmakers, particularly in the Hartford region. It will explore the reasons why craftsmen like Aaron Chapin thrived, while Benjamin C. Gillett relocated, and Lambert Hitchcock changed furniture making techniques in order to survive this highly competitive period. Alyce Perry Englund is Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts at the Wadsworth Atheneum.

Space is limited, and reservations are recommended. For more information or reservations, please call (860) 236-5621 x209 or email Mary Muller.

This lecture series is made possible through the generous support of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers and the Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking.
