JANUARY 2012

elm200.jpgLecture:
Eric Rutkow,
The Rise and Fall of Two Great American Trees

Saturday, January 28 | 2:00 pm
FREE with general admission

Two of the nation's greatest trees, the American chestnut and American elm, were decimated during the twentieth century. In conjunction with the New Life for Connecticut Trees and Lost Landscapes exhibitions, author and historian Eric Rutkow will present a lecture examining the histories of these two trees. Mr. Rutkow will look at the reasons these two species became so central to American life, the forces that brought about their decline, and the efforts Americans made to save them. Eric Rutkow is the author of American Canopy, a new book scheduled for publication in the spring of 2012, which explores the relationship between Americans and their trees and how this relationship has profoundly shaped the history of the United States. For more information, call (860) 236-5621 x209 or email Mary Muller.

Behind-the-Scenes Tours

Saturday, February 11
Saturday, March 10
Saturday, April 14

Due to the overwhelming response to our new behind-the-scenes tours, we are now offering the opportunity to purchase tickets in advance. Tickets for the next three months can be purchased online or at the CHS until noon the day prior to the tour. Secure your spot today! On the day of the tour, remaining tickets are sold in person on a first-come, first-served basis, starting at 9:00 am. Call (860) 236-5621 to check availability.

We are so sorry that we weren't able to accommodate everyone who turned out for the first tours in January. We were amazed by the enthusiastic response and how quickly the limited spaces filled up, and we know many people were frustrated and disappointed. We are working hard to improve our ticketing procedures and ensure a smooth and positive experience for all of our visitors in the future.
