Children’s Books from the CHS Collections

Kellogg print, 1852-3CHS has one of the most significant children’s book collections in the country based on both the quantity and rarity of the books. The collection is made up of 8,500 volumes that span the mid-1700s to today. Come see a selection of these books installed in our front hallway. Then, visit our Research Center to explore more from the collection.

A highly sensory, award-winning, multi-media exhibit throughout five galleries that explores the Africans’ struggle for freedom and the Connecticut people who helped them achieve it in New London, New Haven, Hartford and Farmington, following the 1839 revolt on the ship Amistad. Why have people moved to Connecticut over time? This hands-on gallery explores some of the reasons through interactives geared to families with children age 2-13, although older kids and adults may also want to time themselves on the thread machine, or sew tobacco leaves and set them to dry, or build a brick wall. There is dress up too, a bit about music, and places to sit while your family is discovery coming to Connecticut. It all starts by spinning a giant wheel of chance. Will you decide to stay or go?
