Famous Artists School
The Famous Artists School was an art school located in Wesport, Connecticut. Twelve notable professional commercial artists founded the school in 1948. The School was known for its variety of correspondence course, including lessons in cartooning. Several successful comic book artists graduated from and/or became instructors for the school, most notably: Lyman Anderson, Jay Disbrown, Graham Ingles, and Bernie Wrightson; Al Capp, Norman Rockwell, Milt Caniff, and Rube Goldberg are boasted of as being among some of the schools former instructors. Other cartoonists from the Famous Artists School have worked in newspaper comic strips, and the school has produced many notable commercial and fine artists. The Famous Artists School is still in operation, having moved from Westport to Wilton circa 1994. Although the School has not carried a cartooning program for quite some time (at least 2 decades), it still offers courses in a variety of disciplines. FAS is now affiliated with an organization known as Cortina Learning International, Inc., and maintains a web site at http://members.aol.com/cortinainc/. |
