The Library houses approximately 125,000 volumes, including many rare books, family and town histories, and early Connecticut imprints.

 

Manuscript Collections

The Library is also home to 3,000,000 manuscripts, including correspondence, diaries, and papers from the mid-17th century to the present. The CHS Manuscript Collections contain the papers of political and military leaders, educators, clergymen, inventors, and obscure persons who contributed to making our state what it is. The CHS also holds the records of many Connecticut towns, churches, social and educational organizations, and industries.

Search our patriotic covers (envelopes) database, view broadsides (posters) from the Civil War era, or browse our manuscripts project which offers a listing by name of soldiers, politicians and ordinary people who were involved in the Civil War in Connecticut. In some cases you can read original letters online, or view maps and photographs.
