The CHS Bulletin

The Connecticut Historical Society Bulletin was a scholarly, quarterly publication of the CHS published from 1936 through 1999.

“The Connecticut Captivity of Major Christopher French” by Sheldon S. Cohen. Included in volume 55:3-4. Price $12.00, shipping $2.00.
An irreverent look at Revolutionary Hartford through the eyes of an Anglo-Irish prisoner-of-war, this issue features annotated transcriptions of diaries in the possession of The Connecticut Historical Society and the Library of Congress.

“Connecticut Monumental Epoch: A Survey of Civil War Memorials” by David F. Ransom. Volumes 58:1-4 and 59:1-4. Price $24.00 per volume, shipping $2.00.
This guide lists 136 Civil War monuments and memorials by town (Ansonia through Litchfield in volume 58, Madison through Woodbury in volume 59). A typical entry includes location, historical and artistic significance, a detailed description, and at least one illlustration. Volume 58 also includes general information on the types of monuments, major suppliers, and dedication ceremonies. This guide is also available online.

“The Connecicut Yankee and the Camera: 1839-1889” by William F. Robinson. Included in volume 47:4. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00.
This volume as includes a "Checklist of Connecticut Photographers by Town: 1839-1889" and "Alphabetical Index of Connecticut Photographers: 1839-1889" by Sue Elizabeth Fuller.

Exhibition Catalogues

“Connecticut Engravers 1774-1820” by Thompson R. Harlow. Voluem 36:4. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00.
Among the engravers included in this 1971/72 exhibition were Joel Allen (1775-1825), Luther John Warner Barber (1798-1885), Richard Brunton ( -1832), Abel Buell (1742-1822), Martin Bull (1744-1825), Amos Doolittle (1775-1832), and Abner Reed 91771-1866).

“Connecticut Pastels 1775-1820” by William Lamson Warren. Volume 24:4. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00.
Artists included in this 1959/60 exhibition were Abiel Abbott Cooley (1782-1858), Abraham Delanoy (1742-1795), Sarah Perkins (1771-1831), Joseph Steward (1753-1802), and members of the Sharples family.

“'Good Thoughts in Good Dress': Lydia Sigourney, Hartford Poet” by Gary E. Wait, Elizabeth Pratt Fox, and Everett C. Wilkie, Jr. Volume 57:1-2. Price $12.00, shipping $2.00.
Although not technically an exhibition catalogue, this issue is drawn from the 1992 exhibition. Not all items from the exhibit are included, nor are those included in the same order as they were in the exhibit.

“A Middletown Cameo: Mary Wright Alsop and Her Needlework” by Glee Krueger. Volume 52:3-4. Price $12.00, shipping $2.00.
If you are interested in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century needlework, this issue is a must. Illustrated items include canvas work pictures (1754), a slip seat cover (1757), single worked pocket books (various dates), and knitted silk purses (various dates). Although all illustrations are in black and white, the detailed descriptions include color information.

“Matthew Henry Wilson 1814-1892” by William J. Sims. Volume 37:4. Price #3.00, shipping $2.00.
From a 1972/73 exhibition of portraits by London-born Matthew Henry Wilson. Sitters include Gideon Welles (Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War), three of Samuel Colt's children, and members of the Hooker family. Of special note is the record of Wilson's portraits painted while in Hartford compiled using transcriptions of sections of period letters and newspaper articles.

“Nathaniel Jocelyn 1796-1881” by Foster Wild Rice. Volume 31:4. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00.
From an 1966/67 exhibition of the works of the Connecticut artist. One of his best known portraits is that of Cinque, leader of the Amistad captives. This issue includes a "Checklist of Paintings, Miniatures, and Drawings by Nathaniel Jocelyn."

“New England Crewel Embroideries” by Adolph S. Cavallo. Included in volume 24:2. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00.

“Portrait Miniatures on Ivory 1750-1850 From the Collection of The Connecticut Historical Society” by Philip Dunbar. Volume 29:4. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00
From a 1964 exhibit of fifty-three miniatures for the CHS Collections. Sitters include Silas Deane and Fanny Skinner. Many of the artists are listed as unknown, known artists include Anson Dickinson (1779-1852), Washington Blanchard (1808-?), Nathaniel Jocelyn (1796-1881), and Charles William Eldredge (1811-1883).

“William Ruthven Wheeler 1832-1893” by Margaret Brockway Ofslager. Volume 39:4. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00.
From a 1974 exhibition of the works of Michigan-born William Ruthven Wheeler. He moved to Hartford in 1861 and “became portrait painter to the expanding commercial community.” A number of the portraits illustrated are of children.

“Were the Guilford Painted Chests Made in Saybrook?” by William L. Warren. “A Discovery on the Connecticut Chest” by Houghton Bulkeley. Included in volume 23:1. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00.

“Chapin Secretary” by Newton C. Brainard. “More About Painted Chests” by William L. Warren. Included in volume 23:2. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00.

“The Spencer Chairs and Regional Chairmaking in the Connecticut River Valley, 1639-1863” by Robert F. Trent. Included in volume 49:4. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00.

“A Complaint Against Katherine Harrison, 1669” by Carolyn S. Langdon. Included in volume 34:1. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00.
Widow Harrison of Wethersfield was "suspicioned" of witchcraft, tried and found guilty. However, although remanded to jail until a later court session, she somehow remained at liberty. The “complaint” requested that she actually be locked up. The article includes a number of details about the accusers and the accusations.

“Tear Down the College!” Included in volume 34:2. Price $3.00, shipping $2.00.
The text of an 1823 letter by J. D. Wilcox dealing with a case of grave robbing and Yale Medical College.
