Welcome to The Connecticut Historical Society Library's Civil War Broadsides collection. This selection includes 56 images, which represents the majority of the CHS collection of Civil War broadsides.

Broadsides, or Broadsheets, are sheets of paper printed on one or both sides which are used for a variety of purposes, such as advertisements and announcements. During the Civil War one common use of the broadside format was for recruiting purposes. Broadsides are considered "ephemera;" that is, simply put, broadsides and broadsheets were produced with no intention of preservation. Most were meant to be posted and then discarded when they had served their purpose. That is what makes so many broadsides rare, if not unique.
